Rhinoplasty is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures performed in America today, and it’s no wonder why. A subtle change can make a big difference in the overall look and proportions of your face. It can bring renewed self-confidence to people, as well as provide them with relief after years of breathing difficulties. With over 17 years of experience, I know how important it is to make sure my patients are well-educated about their plastic surgery options, and one of the most common things people want to know is how long it will take to recover from a rhinoplasty, or nose job, as it is more commonly known.
Rhinoplasty Recovery Time
It’s best to think of your final recovery from rhinoplasty in terms of years, rather than months. First, you will go through the initial recovery from your surgery, and then you will have a process of long-term healing. The reason recovery from rhinoplasty takes longer than other plastic surgery procedures is because the nose – specifically the tip of the nose – is a delicate, and sensitive part of the body and it typically remains at least partially swollen for prolonged periods of time.
- Initial Recovery
Immediately following your rhinoplasty procedure, you will experience visible swelling and bruising for several weeks. I will remove the splint after the first week, and at that time I will be able to see the basic shape of what your nose will ultimately look like – primarily the shape of the bridge. You can expect an increase in swelling after the splint is removed. Bruising is variable from person to person and if you do bruise, expect it to resolve in about 2 weeks. After about 4-6 weeks, the majority of the swelling will subside, and you will be able to see more definition in the bridge area and in the tip of the nose.
- Long-Term Recovery
As you continue to heal over the months, you will continue to see improvements in your nose. At around the 3 to 6 month mark, marked swelling subsides for the majority of my patients, and they begin to see more defined results. However, the best is still yet to come, as most of my La Jolla patients will not see their final results until the 12-month mark or longer. But trust me, patience is important and the wait is well worth it.
Factors That Influence Recovery Time
No two La Jolla rhinoplasty procedures are the same; therefore, no two recoveries will be the same. However, there are some factors that can cause your recovery time to take longer, such as:
- Having thick skin on your nose,
- Requiring a more extensive surgical technique with multiple grafts for your rhinoplasty,
- Having had a previous rhinoplasty
- Being a smoker, and
- Not adhering to post-op instructions.
