What is the PicoSure Focus Laser Treatment?
The PicoSure Focus treatment is a unique cosmetic procedure that harnesses the power of advanced laser technology to revitalize and rejuvenate the skin. PicoSure is the first picosecond aesthetic laser specifically designed for treating pigmentary conditions, wrinkles, and acne scarring for a younger-looking appearance.
PicoSure is a non-surgical, non-invasive, and non-ablative laser that delivers exceptional results with minimal discomfort and little to no downtime. In most cases, patients experience minor redness and swelling, and return to work the next day.
How Does the PicoSure Focus Laser Work?
The Focus tip of the PicoSure laser magnifies and directs ultra-short laser pulses to the skin, stimulating Laser-Induced Optical Breakdown (LIOB). This means it specifically causes microscopic damage in the dermis layer of the skin while leaving the epidermis untouched, delivering better aesthetic results in fewer treatment sessions and little to no downtime.
These breakdowns signal the body to produce collagen and elastin, thus enabling skin revitalization.
What Skin Concerns Can the PicoSure Focus Laser Treat?
At Brucker Plastic Surgery, we recommend the PicoSure Focus laser for individuals who have the following skin concerns:
- Brown Spots
- Age Spots
- Freckles
- Sun Damage
- Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation
- Melasma
- Fine Lines and Wrinkles
- Acne Scars, Pigment, and Texture
Additionally, we can also use the PicoSure Focus Treatment to treat sun damage and age spots on the chest, back, arms, legs, and hands.
How Many PicoSure Treatments Will I Need?
This depends on your unique aesthetic goals, as well as the extent of your skin concerns. While your individual treatment plan may be different from others, we typically recommend three to four PicoSure treatment sessions for most patients. With that said, more severe pigmented lesions and challenging textural issues may require additional treatment sessions to achieve optimal results.
At your initial PicoSure consultation, your aesthetic goals will be discussed and a personalized treatment plan that details the recommended number of sessions and what you can expect in terms of treatment results will be created.

Who is a Good Candidate for the PicoSure Focus Treatment?
If you are considering the PicoSure Focus treatment, it is important to understand whether you are the right candidate for this aesthetic procedure. Dr. Brucker generally recommends this treatment to individuals who have pigmentation concerns, such as dark spots and sun damage, as fine lines and wrinkles, as well as acne scarring.
Furthermore, the PicoSure laser is safe and effective for all skin tones. One of the remarkable benefits of the PicoSure Focus treatment is that unlike many other lasers, it can provide exceptional results for patients of all complexions and skin tones.
Are There Any Side Effects Associated with the PicoSure Focus Treatment?
Similar to other aesthetic treatments, there are a few minor side effects associated with the PicoSure Focus treatment. Generally, most patients experience temporary redness and swelling at the treatment site immediately following the procedure. This will feel comparable to a sunburn and should resolve within a couple hours.
Patients may also experience an acne-like breakout or rash that will resolve on its own shortly after the procedure, but this is unlikely. Dr. Brucker and his team are highly-trained and experienced in administering this laser, and understand how to achieve beautiful results while minimizing the chances of experiencing an unwanted side effect.
What Does the PicoSure Laser Feel Like?
This is a common question we get at Brucker Plastic Surgery regarding our PicoSure Focus Treatment in La Jolla and San Diego. Most patients describe the experience as slightly uncomfortable, with the feeling of the laser being comparable to a small rubber band snapping against the skin.
We can apply a numbing cream to your skin to ensure the treatment is more pleasant for you.
What are the Recommended Aftercare Steps?
To ensure you experience the desired treatment results, it is essential to properly take care of your skin and treated area following the PicoSure procedure. Dr. Brucker recommends:
- Cleaning the treated area regularly with a mild, gentle, fragrance-free cleanser.
- Avoid any makeup applications immediately after treatment and refrain from using foundation 24-48 hours following the treatment.
- Avoid using exfoliation products or ingredients 3-5 days after the treatment. This may include retinol, alpha hydroxy acid, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, kojic acid, and niacinamide.
- Soothe any skin redness and discomfort with cool compresses.
- Avoid picking at any dry, flaking skin or pigmentation that rises to the surface. This will naturally shed on its own and you may cause unwanted scarring if you pick at your skin while it is healing.
- Keep the skin optimally hydrated with a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer. This promotes adequate healing and amplifies your treatment results.
- Using recommended post laser skin products. Available for purchase at our office.
Before your PicoSure Focus laser treatment, we will provide an easy-to-follow aftercare plan that details what you should and should not do during your treatment recovery phase.
How Much Does the PicoSure Focus Treatment Cost?
This depends on your individual treatment plan and the number of sessions that are recommended for achieving optimal results.
We recommend scheduling a consultation at Brucker Plastic Surgery to better understand how this innovative laser treatment can improve your complexion and receive detailed information regarding estimated treatment costs.
