Many of my La Jolla face and neck lift patients come to me because they trust us at Brucker Plastic Surgery to give them natural-looking, youthful results. I find that most of the La Jolla women and men who consult with me about a face and neck lift, or rhytidectomy, as it is also called, don’t want to look as if they have had any work done. They simply want to look refreshed and like the best version of themselves for their age. Because of this common concern among La Jolla facelift patients, one of the frequent questions I am asked during facelift consultations is, “How visible are facelift scars? Will it be obvious that I’ve had surgery?” In this segment I will briefly explain the facelift procedure, including how I hide scarring in the hairline to avoid showing telltale signs of your cosmetic procedure.
What is a Facelift?
A facelift, also called a face and neck lift, is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to restore the youthful contours of your lower face and neck. From a surgical standpoint, a facelift includes lifting and tightening the skin of the face and neck if necessary, including:
- Addressing sagging in your mid-face, which may cause a droopy or unhappy appearance;
- Minimizing deep creases along your nose that extend along your mouth (nasolabial folds), a common sign of aging;
- Repositioning or transferring fat into areas if your face that have fallen or dissipated, to reverse a sunken or hollow appearance;
- Smoothing jowls along the jawline in the lower portion of the face, which often sag over time; and
- Tightening up the skin under the chin and lower jaw to remove an unwanted double chin, which with aging, can even be present on someone of a healthy weight and BMI.
How is a Facelift Performed?
At Brucker Plastic Surgery I perform a facelift by making incisions hidden in your hairline, near the area of your temples, continuing down to and behind your ears. If you have a double chin or jowls to address, I may also make an incision in an inconspicuous location in the natural crease underneath your chin. By making these precise incisions carefully and meticulously, I can address all of the problem areas listed above. And by hiding the incisions in your hairline and preserving the tragus (the small prominence on the inner side of your external ear) your facelift scars should not be easily noticeable. After a short recovery period, people will notice that you look like a younger and more refreshed version of yourself and you are unlikely to have any visible scarring to indicate that you’ve had work done.
