Model Laying on Belly on a Bed in LingerieIf you’re considering a breast augmentation, one of the most important decisions you’ll make – besides choosing your plastic surgeon – will be what type of implants to choose. Breast implants come in various shapes, sizes and profiles, and each can provide different, unique looks for the women who live in La Jolla. One of the most asked questions besides the choice of size is the choice of shape.  Breast implants come in two forms – round implants or shaped implants, also referred to as teardrop implants. Do you have questions about what kind of breast implant you want for your breast augmentation? If so, I have summarized general information regarding both the round and shaped/teardrop breast implants and the results they provide.

Most Women Choose Round Breast Implants

When it comes to selecting breast implants for a breast augmentation, most of my La Jolla patients choose round implants.   Round implants provide more fullness at the top of the breasts. They generally allow for better cleavage as well. Round breast implants can be either smooth or textured and can be filled with saline, cohesive silicone, or a slightly firmer highly cohesive silicone.  Other benefits of round implants are that they carry no risk of rotation after they are implanted and they are usually less expensive than shaped implants.

Shaped or Teardrop Implants Look More Natural

The other choice which has been gaining popularity for the women of La Jolla is shaped/teardrop breast implants which typically provide more natural-looking breast augmentation results.  Shaped breast implants all have a textured surface and a sloped upper contour which is narrower on the top than it is on the bottom– hence the term “teardrop”.   For women who are looking for a larger breast size while maintaining the most natural appearance without any telltale roundness in the upper chest, shaped or teardrop implants can be an excellent choice.  Shaped implants can also slightly rotate the nipple to a higher position for patients who are on the verge of needing a breast lift.  Some considerations regarding shaped implants are a slight risk of rotation and higher cost.

Choosing the Right Breast Implant Type for You

There are many factors to account for when considering breast augmentation surgery.   It is important to do your due diligence to make sure you fully understand your options and what would work best for your lifestyle and body frame.  When it comes to choosing your breast implant shape, consider what end result appeals to you most.  If you want overall fullness and better cleavage, then round implants are probably best. But if you want a larger yet the most natural appearance, a shaped implant might be the right choice for you.
